Remedial Reading Instruction

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go” – Dr. Seuss

Barton Marks has an M.Ed in Special Education, has taught remedial reading for twenty years in a variety of settings: private and public schools, summer camps for dyslexic children, community organizations and non-profits, private lessons, and guest lecturing at Texas State University.  He teaches students of all ages, ranging from early elementary school to adults.

Important facts about reading issues and remediation:

  • Schools will often miss reading difficulties before the 2nd grade and wait until the student is 2 years behind.

  • Parents often identify a child's reading difficulty at a much earlier age

  • Early detection and remediation helps to minimize the struggling reader's academic and emotional suffering

Reading difficulty can "look like" any of these:

He hates reading. Any time it’s about reading,

he stops cooperating and wants to do literally anything but that

She's a whiz at math, but she has a terrible time with reading

She's beginning to really dislike school. I’m worried about her future

Since he was very young, I saw that he was learning differently than his older sibling had...

He's started saying he's 'stupid' because he's having trouble doing things all the other kids are doing without any problems
